About Us

Our multigenerational community at MoCo-Housing is just getting started!  We are actively searching for new members and the perfect spot for our new neighborhood. Ideally, this location will be in Montgomery County, MD near Wheaton-Glenmont.

Our Vision

Our founders believe that suburban sprawl is hurting our way of life by isolating us, making us spend and consume more. We strive to create an intentional community where residents of all ages can share knowledge and resources to increase our quality of life and decrease our impact on the environment.

What is Cohousing?

Cohousing is a form of intentional community that combines private dwellings with large common spaces. Residents can use these spaces to cook and eat meals, plant gardens, host events, work collaboratively, and so much more. The community is designed by the residents to facilitate neighborly interactions while providing ample private spaces for your immediate family. We all pitch in to build the community, and collectively reap the rewards!

  • How much does it cost to join?
While cohousing is many things, it is not considered "affordable" housing. Members joining a forming community should expect to pay at or above market rate for their area. The high barrier to entry is due to several reasons, including but not limited to: - Economy of scale, or lack thereof. Cohousing inherently cannot be built in cookie-cutter fashion like most modern developments. A community functions best when every member of the initial group has input on the design and layout before construction begins; a process which is integral to forming the personal relationships that make cohousing unique. - Extensive common areas and features are expensive and typically unheard of in standard housing. However, many veterans of cohousing mention the cost savings afforded by having common meals and sharing equipment for gardening/crafts/maintenance. - Environmentally sustainable materials and technologies are extremely popular in cohousing, and have a high upfront cost even though they help save in the long run.
  • When can I move in?
We hope to move in by 2030. This is still a long way off, and we have a lot of work to do to get there!
  • Don't see an answer to your question?

  • What is an intentional community?
According to the Foundation For Intentional Community (ic.org), an intentional community (IC) is "a group of people who have chosen to live together or share resources on the basis of common values". ICs come in many different flavors with different priorities and living arrangements. Co-housing defines itself as a community where each family unit gets a private dwelling, but shares some or many common areas.
  • Will I have my own kitchen?
Yes! Each household will have their own fully equipped independent residence, including bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, and living/private recreation rooms.
